Sherpa’s, the guides of the Sherpa people have assisted many western mountaineers to climb the highest summits of the Himalayas. Who are these silent people and what is their background? Why do they risk their life on mountains they never would climb without western clients?
In this documentary film of director Margriet Jansen we follow Nima Temba Sherpa during the accession of the 8200 meter Cho Oyu summit. Nima tells his story and gives us a good view behind the scenes of his Sherpa life.

Milarepa is a Tibetan film produced in 2006. It is set in the Spiti Valley, high in the Himalayas in the Zanskar region close to the border between India and Tibet.

Directed by Neten Chokling, a Lama from Western Bhutan who has previously worked with Khyentse Norbu on the films such as The Cup and Travellers and Magicians, the film is the first part about the adventurous formative years of the legendary buddhist mystic, Milarepa (1052-1135) who is one of the most widely known Tibetan Saints. The film has spectacular cinematography and convincing performances in this combined myth, biography, adventure, history and docudrama.

The tale is a staple in Tibetan Traditions, Buddhism, and the legend of Milarepa elevates him to the status of national hero in Tibet and nearly so in Buddhist regions of India, China and Pakistan. He is one of the so called Tibetan Saints or great yogi's in Tibetan Buddhism.

Culture Wrap presenteert de bioscooppremiere van:

De afgelopen drie jaar bracht klimaatjournaliste Bernice Notenboom verslag uit vanaf de hotspots van klimaatverandering: het noordpoolgebied en de Zuidpool. Ze ondernam expedities door Siberië, door Groenland en naar de Noordpool. Ook was ze de eerste Nederlandse vrouw die de Zuidpool bereikte, per ski. Dit jaar ligt haar focus op een ander gebied waar de klimaatverandering merkbaar is: de Himalaya. De gletsjers van deze bergketen waar bijna alle grote rivieren van Oost-Azië hun oorsprong vinden, smelten in hoog tempo. Ruim 1,5 miljard mensen zijn van dit smeltwater afhankelijk

Bernice bezocht  de plaatselijke bevolking en enkele kloostergemeenschappen. Vervolgens beklom ze de Mount Everest, en aanschouwde daarbij bergmeren die door het smeltwater dreigen te overstromen: een verschijnsel waardoor enkele dorpen al zijn weggevaagd.

Regisseur Mark Verkerk (Buddha’s Lost Children) ging mee met Bernice Notenboom en filmde een groot deel van de expeditie. Onderdeel hiervan was een bezoek aan de lama van de Khumbu vallei, aan wie alle klimmers een zegening vragen alvorens de Everest te bestijgen. De film geeft een actueel beeld van een snel veranderend gebied: Het gezaghebbende onderzoeksinstituut IPCC beweert dat er over veertig jaar geen sneeuw of ijs meer te vinden is. Himalaya Alert is opgedragen aan Sherpa Lhakpa Nuru, omgekomen bij een lawine tijdens deze expeditie in de Khumbu ijsvallei. Bernice Notenboom en gids Walter Laserer overleefden deze lawine ternauwernood.

 Stichting CULTURE WRAP is de Nederlandse dochter van de Amerikaanse non-profit media organisatie CULTURE WRAP die de bevordering van interculturele verstandhouding  tot doel heeft.
