What is Culture Wrap?
Culture Wrap was founded in 2006 by filmmaker Gerrie Timmerman as a non-profit foundation, based on a simple but powerful idea:
Film can bring together people who might otherwise never meet.
Culture Wrap connects you with stories and people from all over the world.
Through film, documentaries, and now even stage productions, we introduce you to cultures you might not yet know — not as a distant spectator, but as someone who actively participates.
Are you the viewer or the audience? If you attend one of our film screenings, you can build personal friendships with people from the culture being screened, both in your own community and on the other side of the world.
And would you like to do more? You can often also contribute directly to the charitable project associated with that film, as a donor or as a volunteer.
Are you a filmmaker or an artist? Through our global network, the Film & Art Alliance, you share ideas and resources with creators who, like you, believe that media can bring the world closer together.
Are you a teacher? Then you can set up international classroom collaborations with us, where you and your students build personal friendships with people on the other side of the world, but certainly also within their own diverse communities.
Wherever you stand — as a viewer, teacher, student, or filmmaker — Culture Wrap invites you to look beyond your own environment and become part of a global creative movement that connects cultures.
Just a personal note:
In 2006, I started Culture Wrap as one way to respond to what had happened on 9/11.
As humanity, we could have united then, but instead, we became even more divided.
With Culture Wrap, I try to offer a counterpoint to that and bring people back together.
From the silver screen or the stage as a starting point, to personal encounters and friendships as a result.
